David Josué Jiménez Silva (Spanish pronunciation: [daˈβið xoˈswe xiˈmeneθ ˈsilβa]; born 8 January 1986) is a Spanish footballer who plays for Manchester City and the Spanish national team. Silva plays mainly as an attacking midfielder but has also played as a winger or a second striker on some occasions.

Silva began the 2011–12 season in fine form, scoring the third goal in City's 4–0 thrashing of Swansea City and was voted man of the match. He also scored the following week against Bolton Wanderers, and was again named man of the match. Silva then set up two of Sergio Agüero's three goals in City's second home game against Wigan Athletic. After a series of magnificent displays from Silva, City boss Roberto Mancini compared him to fellow Spain internationals Xavi and Andrés Iniesta and said that Silva is "one of the best players in the world".On 1 October, Silva was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month for his outstanding performances, making it the first time ever that two Manchester City players have won the award in back to back months with Edin Džeko winning it the month before.

In the first Manchester Derby of the season at Old Trafford, Manchester City won 6–1, with Silva proving, yet again, to be instrumental in the Manchester City attack, scoring the fifth goal, setting up Edin Džeko's second with a chested volley pass through the United defense, and participating in the first two goals with excellent passing to James Milner to assist Mario Balotelli. On 25 October 2011, in an interview with a Spanish radio station, Silva revealed that he turned down FC Barcelona and Real Madrid so he could sign for City and that he wants to stay at the club for years. He commented, "Madrid and Barcelona are great teams, but I'm happy here and I would like to stay here for many years." Former City and England defender Earl Barrett said he is almost impossible to stop due to his ability to create space and Andy Cole, who mostly played for Manchester United, has stated that Silva "is a joy to watch."

Silva scored a goal in City's 3–2 away win against Queens Park Rangers on 5 November and also scored in City's 1–0 home win against Arsenal on 18 December. He also contributed by scoring the fourth goal in City's 4–0 home win against West Brom on 11 April.

In addition to winning his first Premier League medal with Manchester City, he also finished the season as top of the assists table with 17 assists to his name and was one of four City players who made it in the PFA's Premier League Team of the Year.

Edin Džeko (Bosnian (Cyrillic): Един Џеко; Bosnian pronunciation: [ˈɛdin ˈdʒɛkɔ], born 17 March 1986) is a Bosnian footballer who plays as a striker for Premier League club Manchester City and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team. He was named Bosnian Footballer of the Year for 2009 and 2010. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, he is known as Bosanski dijamant (The Bosnian Diamond). He has also played for Željezničar, FK Teplice, FK Ústí nad Labem and VfL Wolfsburg.

Following his medical examination in London he travelled to Manchester on 5 January, and on 7 January, Džeko was confirmed as a Manchester City player, joining the club on a four and a half year deal.

He made his debut for the club in a 4–3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on 15 January in which he set up Yaya Touré for the third goal of the match. Džeko marked his FA Cup debut on 30 January 2011 with the equalising goal in Manchester City's fourth round match against Notts County which ended in a 1–1 draw. In the replay on 20 February, Džeko again scored, helping Manchester City progress to the next round in a 5–0 romp. Džeko scored twice against Aris Thessaloniki within four and a half minutes at the City of Manchester Stadium in the second leg of the last 32 of the Europa League on 24 February 2011.

On 25 April 2011, Džeko scored his first Premier League goal with a right footed finish against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park. This was the only goal of the game in a 1–0 win for Manchester City.

Although his form in the second half of the season in the Premier League fluctuated, Džeko's three goals were all important. His equaliser against Notts County to in the FA Cup forced a replay and City eventually went all the way to win the FA Cup.

The goal against Blackburn Rovers sealed a vital 1–0 victory which to all-but-secured a fourth spot in the league for Manchester City. His last goal was against Bolton Wanderers on the final day of the season and guaranteed City third spot over Arsenal and automatic qualification into the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Sergio Leonel "Kun" Agüero del Castillo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈseɾxjo aˈɣweɾo]; born 2 June 1988) is an Argentine footballer who plays as a striker for Manchester City in England's Premier League and the Argentine national team. On 5 July 2003, he became the youngest player to debut in the Argentine Primera División at 15 years and 35 days, breaking the record previously established by Diego Maradona in 1976. He plays with the shirt name Kun Agüero.

On 28 July 2011, Manchester City confirmed that Agüero had signed a five-year contract with the club. The fee was reported to be in the region of £38 million (€45 million, $60 million). He was given the number 16 shirt for his first season at City and wears the shirt name Kun Agüero. He was an unused substitute in the Dublin Super Cup match against Internazionale and the 2011 FA Community Shield against Manchester United with manager Roberto Mancini believing Agüero was not yet fit. Agüero made his debut for City on 15 August 2011 in a 4–0 Premier League victory over Swansea City. Agüero came on as a substitute in the 59th minute, scoring his first goal for the club within nine minutes after a tap-in from a cross from full back Micah Richards. He then turned provider with an assist after chipping over the oncoming goalkeeper before flicking the ball back into the penalty box and into the path of David Silva to score. Agüero rounded off his debut by scoring again in injury time with a 30-yard strike. His 30 minute debut gained rave reviews among football journalists, with some suggesting it was one of the best in English football. City continued their strong start, winning 3–2 away at Bolton Wanderers with Agüero missing two chances in the penalty box. On 28 August, Agüero scored his third league goal in Manchester City's 5–1 rout of Tottenham Hotspur. On his third start for the club, he scored his first hat-trick in English football, against Wigan Athletic. On 18 September, he scored twice at Craven Cottage against Fulham, but City were held to a 2–2 draw. Having been substituted after just 28 minutes due to an injury during a 4–0 win against Blackburn Rovers on 1 October, Agüero returned to action in a 2011–12 UEFA Champions League group stage fixture, where he came on for Nigel de Jong on 62 minutes and scored a 93rd minute winner in his side's 2–1 victory against Villarreal CF on 18 October. On 23 October, Agüero took part in his first Manchester derby, scoring in the 69th minute as he converted a Micah Richards pass across the face of goal. The match incredibly finished 6–1 to City. On 1 November, Agüero was shortlisted for the prestigious FIFA Ballon d'Or. On 19 November, he scored a penalty in a 3–1 win at home to Newcastle United, ending Newcastle's unbeaten start to the season.

Agüero made his League Cup debut in the quarter final match against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, scoring the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute from an Adam Johnson through-ball. His next goal came in a 5–1 home win against Norwich City, opening the scoring in the 32nd minute, giving him his 13th goal of the season and maintaining the team's 100% league record at home. On 21 December, he scored a brace as City beat Stoke City 3–0 at home. On 3 January 2012, he opened the scoring in a 3–0 win at home to Liverpool, beating Pepe Reina with a low shot. Agüero scored his 15th goal on 4 February, scoring a penalty against Fulham in a 3–0 win at a snow-covered Etihad Stadium. During the first-leg of a Europa League round of 32 match against FC Porto, Agüero entered the field in the 78th minute for Mario Balotelli and scored the match-winning goal, and his first Europa League goal for Manchester City, in the 85th minute. The game ended 2–1, and, in the second-leg, Agüero scored within 19 seconds at Etihad Stadium in a 4–0 win on 22 February. Manchester City advanced to the last 16 of the 2011–12 UEFA Europa League, having won 6–1 on aggregate. On 25 February, Agüero scored his 16th league goal in a 3–0 win against Blackburn Rovers During the second-leg of Manchester City's Round of 16 Europa League fixture against Sporting Clube de Portugal on 15 March, Agüero netted a double to help City claim a 3–2 win, having been trailing 2–0 at half-time, to level the scores at 3–3 on aggregate. Sporting CP won on away goals, as they defeated Manchester City 1–0 in the first-leg on 8 March. One week later, Agüero scored his 17th league goal in 2–1 win against Chelsea on 21 March. On 29 March, Agüero was ruled out for 10 days to two weeks due to a foot problem, which was later diagnosed as a reaction to a substance that blistered his foot. On 11 April, Agüero scored two goals for himself and also set up another two goals (for David Silva and Carlos Tévez) in a 4–0 home victory against West Bromwich Albion. On 14 April, Agüero scored a double in a 6–1 away win against Norwich City, his two goals meaning that he had surpassed 20 league goals in the Premier League. He scored one goal in the next match, in which Manchester City beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2–0. On 4 May, Agüero was named Manchester City Player of The Year. His first goal in the 6–1 away win against Norwich also won him the club's "Goal of the Season" award.

Final game of the season

Five straight wins had helped City wipe out the 8-point deficit. Now leading on goal difference going into the final days' fixtures, they faced relegation-threatened QPR, needing only to match or better United's result at Sunderland. Pablo Zabaleta scored in the 39th minute to give City a tense 1–0 lead, while Wayne Rooney had scored at the Stadium of Light to put United one-nil up going in at half-time. However, QPR equalised in the 48th minute after a mistake from Lescott when trying to head the ball back to Hart allowed Djibril Cissé on goal. Shortly after the restart, Rangers were reduced to ten men when Joey Barton was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tévez, an act of retaliation for a kick, and was spotted by a linesman. Despite this, QPR took a shock lead in the 66th minute with Jamie Mackie scoring only their third shot on the Manchester City goal.

Title hopes dwindling, and with City running into a QPR defensive wall, manager Roberto Mancini sent on strikers Edin Dzeko and Mario Balotelli in an attempt to get the two goals City now needed for the title. Injury time beckoned and two goals seemed a forlorn possibility, City's dominance in possession only translating into the single goal over the normal 90 minutes. However, an equalising goal from Edin Dzeko, off a David Silva corner, in the 91st minute gave City a small glimmer of hope, with 4 minutes of the allotted five minutes injury time left to play. In the 94th minute, Agüero, 35 yards from goal, passed to Mario Balotelli just outside the box, then continued his run into the QPR penalty area. Mario Balotelli turned, laying on the pass which Agüero took, slid past two defenders and placed the ball low past Paddy Kenny hitting the back of the net, clinching the win and the title for Manchester City. Agüero's goal sent the Etihad Stadium into a frenzy and he was dragged to the floor jubilantly by his City team-mates. Vincent Kompany recalled that Agüero was crying on the floor, and when asked if he cried during the Manchester City parade the following day, Agüero stated: "Yeah, a little".

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario [Balotelli] was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

Samir Nasri (born 26 June 1987) is a French international footballer who plays for English club Manchester City in the Premier League and the France national team. He primarily plays as an attacking midfielder and a winger, although he has also been deployed in central midfield. Nasri is known for his technical ability, creativity, pace, and ability to read the game. Of Algerian heritage, he is described as a player whose "vision and imagination make him an unpredictable opponent". His playing style, ability, and cultural background have drawn comparisons to French legend Zinedine Zidane.

On 24 August 2011, it was confirmed that Nasri had joined Premier League club Manchester City. The transfer fee was priced in the region of £25 million and the player signed a four-year contract. Nasri was assigned the number 19 shirt and made his club debut on 28 August in a league fixture away to Tottenham Hotspur. In the match, he assisted on three goals as Manchester City cruised to a 5–1 win. In the team's next match following the September international break, Nasri assisted on one of Sergio Agüero's three goals in a 3–0 win over Wigan Athletic. On 1 October, he scored his first goal for the club netting the third goal in a 4–0 victory. Nasri also assisted on two goals in the match. After nearly two months without a league goal, on 3 December, Nasri scored his second goal for Manchester City converting a free kick in a 5–1 win against Norwich City. In the following month, Nasri scored his third goal for the club in a 3–2 win against Tottenham Hotspur. On 21 March, he scored the game-winning goal in a 2–1 win over Chelsea after receiving a through ball from teammate Carlos Tévez. On 22 April, he scored in a 2–0 away win against Wolverhampton Wanderers. On 13 May 2012, Nasri won his first Premier League trophy, as Manchester City were crowned Premier League champions for the 2011–12 season after beating Queens Park Rangers 3–2. He was given the number 8 at the start of the new season. On 12 August, Nasri scored and assisted a goal in the 2012 Community Shield, a 3-2 win against FA Cup winners Chelsea. A week later on the opening day of the 2012-13 Premier League season he scored and assisted again in a 3-2 win, this time against newly-promoted Southampton. He then scored against Ajax Amsterdam in a 3-1 loss in the UEFA Champions League. In the Manchester Derby on the 19th of December Nasri came under criticism for being seemingly unwilling to take one for the team as instead of being in the wall he hid behind Dzeko which then allowed Van Persie to curl the ball around the wall and score a late winner.

Carlos Alberto Tévez (born Carlos Alberto Martínez; 5 February 1984) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a forward for English club Manchester City. He has previously played for Boca Juniors, Corinthians, West Ham United and Manchester United. He transferred to Manchester City from United in the 2009 summer transfer window, becoming the first player to move between the two rival clubs since Terry Cooke in 1999. His energy and goal scoring rate has since made him an indispensable player for the club in the eyes of fellow players and media alike. He was promoted to captain at the beginning of the 2010–11 season by manager Roberto Mancini.

After missing the 1–0 FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester United at Wembley Stadium due to a hamstring injury, Tévez returned to captain City on 14 May 2011 in the historic final victory over Stoke City. Two days later, admist rumours of his departue to Italy in the summer, he announced his desire to stay at Eastlands if his family issues could be resolved. However, on 8 June, he told an Argentine chat show host that he "would not even return there on vacation".

Due to his commitments to the national team in the summer, Tévez was not on the bench for City in the first league game of the season against Swansea City. Tévez made his first appearance of the season in City's second game of the season against Bolton Wanderers coming on in the 68th minute for fellow Argentine Sergio Agüero. Although losing the captains armband to Vincent Kompany, Tévez stated in an interview that he has had a complete turn around on his stance on Manchester and that he is not moving, "I'm happy at City and I'm not moving from there".[93] Tévez started his first game of the season against Wigan Athletic in which Tévez missed a penalty that was won by David Silva but played well in the game which ended 3–0 to City with Agüero scoring a hat trick. On 14 September Tévez made an appearance in City's first ever Champions League game against Napoli coming on as a second half substitute for Edin Džeko which ended 1–1.

Bayern Munich dispute

On 27 September 2011, Tévez was named as a substitute for City's game at Bayern Munich. Mancini claims that Tévez refused to come on as a substitute in the second half, when City was 2–0 down to the German club, although Tévez denies this and calls it a misunderstanding. Tévez's actions received widespread condemnation from various pundits and commentators, with Mancini claiming that he wanted Tévez "out of Manchester City", and that he would never play for the club again. Tévez was then suspended by Manchester City for a maximum period of two weeks as the club began an investigation into whether he refused to come on as a substitute. Following discussions with Roberto Mancini, Sheikh Mansour authorised the placing of Tévez on garden leave where the Argentinian would be paid in full but instructed to stay away from the Manchester City training ground. The club would hold his registration until 2014 unless a suitor could be found. This meant that he would be unable to play any club football unless Manchester City agreed to sell him, and the only football that he could play would be international fixtures for Argentina. However, FIFA regulations allow a player to terminate his contract if he plays in fewer than ten per cent of the club's official matches in any one season.

Return to first-team

Having failed to secure a transfer, and having been fined several weeks' wages and denied a loyalty bonus, Carlos Tévez came back to Manchester and resumed training on 14 February 2012, with backing of his fellow players, but prejudiced an easy return to the squad by giving an interview on Argentinian TV in which he said Roberto Mancini had treated him like a dog. Mancini had also previously stated that he was ready to welcome Tévez to the fold to boost their bid for the Premier League title. On 20 February, Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly stated that Manchester United could have signed Carlos Tévez on a permanent deal if they had acted quicker, hailing Tévez as a "big game player". By 21 February, Tévez had publicly apologised "sincerely and unreservedly" for his conduct, and also withdrew his appeal over the City's decision to severely fine him. Tévez, however, was omitted from the club's 2011–12 Europa League squad. In a statement released by City, Tévez stated "I wish to apologise sincerely and unreservedly to everybody I have let down and to whom my actions over the last few months have caused offence. My wish is to concentrate on playing football for Manchester City Football Club". Tévez was given his own fitness programme when he reported back to the club's Carrington training headquarters, as City said in response "Carlos Tévez has today apologised to all concerned for his recent conduct. Carlos returned to the football club last Tuesday, following a three-month absence from duties, without permission. Carlos has also withdrawn his appeal against the club's finding of gross misconduct which was due to be heard by a Premier League panel in the coming days. He has since begun a training programme designed to return him to optimum fitness". It was also reported on 21 February, that Manchester City were approached three times about bringing Tévez back to West Ham United's Upton Park, when co-chairman David Sullivan had worked hard in an effort to secure Tévez. By 23 February, Roberto Mancini drew the line under his dispute with Tévez, and insisted that he was available for selection.

Tévez made his return to the Manchester City first-team in a 2–1 home victory against Chelsea on 21 March, coming on for Nigel de Jong in the 66th minute before providing the assist for Samir Nasri's winning goal. His first goal of the season came four games later, the third goal in a 4–0 home win against West Bromwich Albion on 11 April. On 14 April, Tévez scored a hat-trick and provided an assist for Agüero in a 6–1 away win against Norwich City. He also played in City's title-winning game against Queens Park Rangers on 13 May.

At the start of the 2012–13 season, it was reported that Tévez had lost a stone in weight during the close season. Roberto Mancini confirmed the player would remain at Manchester City.

Mario Barwuah Balotelli (Italian pronunciation: [ˈmaːrjo baloˈtɛlli]; born Mario Barwuah; 12 August 1990) is an Italian footballer who plays as a striker for Manchester City and the Italy national team.

On 14 May 2011 Balotelli was man of the match in the 2011 FA Cup Final as Manchester City defeated Stoke City 1–0 to win their first trophy in thirty-five years.

Balotelli scored his first goal of the 2011–12 campaign in a 2–0 League Cup win against Birmingham City. He followed this up with the opening goal against Everton three days later. On 1 October 2011 he scored his third goal in as many games in a 4–0 win away to Blackburn Rovers. Balotelli scored the opening two goals and forced the dismissal of Jonny Evans as City beat Manchester United 6–1 at Old Trafford on 23 October 2011. Balotelli made his Champions League debut for City on 2 November 2011, in the second leg against Villarreal. He scored on a penalty shot near the end of the first half, his first Champions League goal for City and his seventh goal overall in the season. On 27 November, Balotelli came on as a 65th minute substitute against Liverpool and was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. Balotelli scored using his right shoulder in City's 5–1 win over Norwich City on 3 December. He put City 1–0 up against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge after just two minutes on 12 December, although Chelsea rallied to win 2–1.

On 22 January 2012, Balotelli came on as a substitute during a match against Tottenham Hotspur. He appeared to stamp on Scott Parker during the match against Tottenham, but, already booked, did not get a second yellow from referee Howard Webb, who did not see the incident. Balotelli subsequently scored his first goal of 2012, a injury-time penalty which secured a 3–2 win for City. He was charged for violent conduct for the kick against Scott Parker and was suspended for four matches, three for violent conduct and one for his second sending off. On 25 February, he scored his tenth league goal of the season in a 3–0 home win against Blackburn Rovers. He scored again the following game in a 2–0 win against Bolton Wanderers. On 31 March, Balotelli scored twice as City drew 3–3 at home against Sunderland. However, Balotelli was criticized for his actions in the match after squabbling with Aleksandar Kolarov over a free kick. Roberto Mancini claimed after the game that he had considered substituting Balotelli just five minutes into the match. On 8 April 2012, Balotelli received his fourth red card of the season, after receiving his second yellow card during the match for a tackle against Bacary Sagna during City's 1–0 loss to Arsenal in April 2012. In the same match he had tackled Arsenal's Alex Song and there was speculation about a nine match suspension. However, one of the match officials saw the Song challenge and no action was taken, and according to FA regulations, no retrospective action can be taken if any of the match officials see the offence in question. He was banned for three games (one for the two yellow cards and two for the previous two red cards in the same season). After the Arsenal match, Mancini appeared to have finally lost his patience with Balotelli, suggesting that Balotelli would not play any part in the remainder of City's season and be sold by the club. Despite this, Balotelli did make an appearance as a late substitute in the last game of the season, a title-deciding match against Queens Park Rangers. Balotelli provided the assist to striker Sergio Agüero, who scored in the 94th minute to give City their first league title since 1968.
